ABOUT US

What is Dark Sky Leather?

Dark Sky Leather is a one-man leather goods shop based in Kansas. I make handmade wallets and everyday carry goods in small batches, using only two materials: full grain leather and shell cordovan — the finest leathers available, period.

I started Dark Sky Leather in the summer of 2022. I never thought I'd end up doing leathercraft — but after watching too many videos and buying a starter kit on a whim, here we are. I've come a long way since those first clumsy cuts and crooked stitches. Glad I started when I did. It's helped me through a lot.

Growing up, I always had to make things. Building, fixing, creating — that's just how I'm wired. Leatherwork was a natural fit: it's hands-on, it's slow, and it produces something real and lasting. Much like my love of photography, it's deeply therapeutic. The process itself is the point, and what comes out of it happens to be something worth owning.

Every piece I make is hand-stitched. Not machine-stitched with a human nearby — actually hand-stitched, one stitch at a time, with a needle and thread. Edges are sanded and burnished by hand. There are no shortcuts, because shortcuts show up later in ways you don't want them to.

I use Rocado shell cordovan from Italy and premium full grain leathers because you deserve the highest quality for your money. These are not mass-produced goods made in a factory. They're made by one person, in a small shop in Kansas, for people who care about what they carry.

No two pieces are exactly alike — that's not a flaw, that's the whole point. Each wallet will age uniquely to you, developing a patina and character that reflects years of your life.

As for the name: I named it Dark Sky Leather for my love of gloomy, rainy weather. Never more at peace than when it's dark and storming outside. But as Eric Draven said in The Crow —

"It can't rain all the time."
